SHQ offers a range of lessons for all our boardsports. If you want to Kite board, Stand Up Paddleboard or Windsurf, it doesn't matter if you are a beginner and would just like to try it or if you are more advanced and want to brush up on some techniques. Kiteboarding is an easy sport to learn, with the right instruction you can get up and riding fast and safely. We want to get you started on your kiteboarding adventure by offering a range of beginner lesson options. We can also help you take your riding to the next level. Our experienced instructors can teach you to make smooth directional changes, get jumping or pro tricks like handlepasses and kiteloops. 

Our lesson rate is just $90 an hour for a private lesson.

Learn to kiteboard with our internationally qualified instructors on the latest equipment. Our training programmes are based on the International Kiteboarding Organisation (IKO) standard. We want to get you riding fast, while making sure you stay safe and have fun. Lesson prices include all kiting and safety equipment. So to get started you'll just need beachwear and bathers.

Shared 1 Hr Lessons

Come with a friend for a one hour taster to find out why everyone is getting hooked on kiteboarding. Have a go at flying the kites on the beach and learn the basics about safety. By the end of the session you’ll be wanting to take the next step and head into the water!

Beginner Lessons

A taster for those who are new to the sport or ideal for those already riding and who want to take it to the next level. Individual lessons with our experienced instructors tailored to you so you can learn at your own pace. Book for 2 hrs and save!

* Note: 1hr Private lesson for beginners with no previous kiteboarding experience is a beach lesson.

Shared Lessons or 1:1 Tuition

Learn privately or bring your friends to feel what it's like to fly! First time kiters will experience the thrill of flying the kite through the power zone in the water. In this lesson you learn beach safety, kite setup and body dragging giving you a taste of what this exhilarating sport has to offer! This 2 hour taster is perfect for gift certificates and for those wanting to get in the water on the first lesson for some fun!

Our 5 hour 'Get Riding' programme

Our 5 hour 'Get Riding' programme is designed to give you the skills and confidence to get up and riding independently. Our experienced instructors can teach you privately at your own pace or do the course with a friend to maximise the fun factor! Either way book the package to save on our standard rates.

2) Windsurfing Lessons with Sandy Beach HQ

Ever wanted to try windsurfing? Can you picture yourself skimming effortlessly across a sparkling summer ocean? Why not let the dream become a reality.  Windsurfing really is pure exhilaration … and who better to introduce you to this amazing experience than Australia’s premier windsurfing school.  SBHQ  has been serving windsurfers since 1979, having been involved in the sport at every level.  We were the ones who started the peak body for the sport in this state, Windsurfing Victoria.


 Courses and Rates

LEVEL 01 BEGINNERS 6 hour course [2 x 3 hours]    $225

This comprehensive introductory program is specially designed for newcomers to the sport .Emphasis is on teaching you in the safest , quickest, most enjoyable way possible.We start with an instructional DVD to familiarise you with the basics followed by your Instructor demonstrating how to get under-way.Then its onto the water together with your Instructor to learn the various manoeuvres. We guarantee that you will be windsurfing competently and confidently by the end of the course .

Equipment , vest and wetsuit included. Maximum class size is 5, minimum is 2.

Courses runs from 10.00am – 1.00pm.


1.5 Hour Introductory lesson $85 private, $60 with a friend

This lesson will give you a thorough introduction to the sport. A discussion on wind theory is followed by your Instructor demonstrating how to get underway. Then its onto steering and turning … gaining more and more confidence as you go. Equipment, vest and wetsuit included.


LEVEL 02 INTERMEDIATE  $85 private, $60 with a friend

1.5 hour lesson Equipment , vest and wetsuit included.

This session covers some of the more advanced techniques that will prepare you for the transition to short board sailing. Remember, enjoy each and every step along the way by choosing from these techniques …


LEVEL 03 WATERSTARTING $85

Waterstarting is an exhilarating , labour saving technique that is essential for progressing to a short board …be it for sailing in the Bay or in the surf. Before you can confidently graduate to gybing it is very important that you learn to waterstart.


LEVEL 04 CARVE GYBING $85

Undoubtedly the most thrilling manoeuvre of them all! You will have already learned more basic gybes by now , but CARVE gybing is the breakthrough move that allows you to rise to a whole new level of enjoyment. Your Instructor will patiently guide you through the steps, trouble shoot , encourage AND celebrate when you pull off your very first gybe!

3) Stand Up Paddle Boarding with Sandy Beach HQ

Despite it’s big-wave surfer origins, stand up paddling is much easier than it looks. The latest technology in boards offers all ages a stable and comfortable on water experience. Anyone at all can find heaps of enjoyment and benefit from a unique form of core body conditioning. The added bonus is the fantastic view of the sea, that this sport gives you. The possibilities for enjoying a beautiful day on the water with friends or the whole family are endless! Even white water rapids will work, if you’re game. Is it any wonder the likes of Lance Armstrong, world surfing champ Tom Carroll, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston have taken it up? Stand up paddleboarding has quickly become the world’s fastest growing watersport. One of the real pluses of SUP-ing is that you get a total body workout without even knowing it. It’s this fitness aspect that is one of the underlying factors responsible for so many of us becoming hooked.

The SUP school is located right on Sandringham harbour, which is acknowledged as the safest, prettiest spot on the bay to learn to SUP. We have changing facilities, plenty of parking and are very close to the Hampton railway station. The beach is dog friendly, children friendly and you can get a truly great coffee at the shq Kiosk.

The SBHQ Windsurfing School is located right on the Sandringham Beach in a 100 year old boat shed. The Sandringham Harbour is acknowledged as the safest, prettiest spot on the Bay to learn windsurfing.
