Beginner E-foil / Foil Assist

A Hydrofoil is essentially a small airoplan that uses water pressure instead of air pressure to provide lift. Hydrofoils can be put under any watercraft and with enouogh speed will engage and lift the rider out of the water.

The newest addition to foiling is to put on a propeller and a motor to provide the power to engage and ride on the foil. This means no external power is needed - no wind, wave or human power. This makes the sport of electric foiling so versatile as it can be done anywhere there is water at any time.

Electric foilng is often broken down into two categories:

E-Foil. While this is the broad term for both categories, generally this referrs to a setup where the propeller providing the thrust is moounted close to (or integrated within) the foil plane. This means as long as the foil is in the water you can have thrust from your motor to power you along. The drawback is that if you dont want to use that power (e.g. you have started riding on a wave) the prop assembly is providing a lot of drag and will negativley impact the performance and 'fun' you can get out of your session.

Foil Assist. This configuratioin has the prop mounted up close to the board (often 15-20cm below the base of the board). This means the motor can be used to engage the foil and to cruise out (while riding low down in the water), but once you chip onto a wave, you can rise up on the foil and bring the prop assembly completely out of the water giving you an unencombered ride on foil.
