Watersports are a fantastic way to stay active, get fit and enjoy the outdoors. With so many sports and disciplines to choose from, there's something for everyone, whether you're chasing big airs, riding waves or simply enjoying a cruise across the water.
This guide will walk you through the different options, explain what each sport involves and help you work out which one might suit you best.
Here are a few things worth considering before choosing your sport.
Wind- and swell-based sports are heavily influenced by the local conditions. Researching the area where you plan to ride is a great starting point and can help narrow down which sports will work best for you.
Think about the wind strength and direction, the type of water you have access to, and whether you're riding on flat water or in waves. Some sports are more versatile than others, so the conditions available to you can make a big difference to your learning experience.
What do you want to get out of your time on the water?
Big airs: Boost huge jumps and stick smooth landings.
Wave riding: Carve through waves and make the most of the swell.
Freeriding: Cruise around, enjoy the breeze and explore at your own pace.
Freestyle: Work on tricks, spins and technical manoeuvres.
Speed: Feel the rush of picking up speed across the water.
All sport offer the above optiosn to varying degrees, however, lerning curves and gear requirments can differ greatly ad you progress into mroe disciplines, so it's worth thinking about what gets you excited.
All watersports can be a great way to get fit, but the physical demands vary considerably between sports and disciplines.
Some require plenty of strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness, while others are relatively accessible to beginners. Don't let your current fitness level put you off, though. With the right equipment and conditions, you can start at your own pace and build your skills over time.
Every watersport takes time and practice to master, but some offer a quicker learning curve than others.
Think about how often you'll realistically get out on the water and how much time you're willing to invest in learning. If you only get the occasional afternoon free, you might prefer a sport that lets you get up and riding relatively quickly. If you're keen to put in the hours, there's always another skill to work towards.
